- The Craig Hewitt Chapter of IPMS/USA is hosting this contest. This is an
open contest, with no club affiliation or membership required for entry. A
separate entry form must be completed for each model entered. Each
model entered must be the sole work of the individual whose name is on
the entry form. Any model found to be the work of someone other than the
entrant will be disqualified.
- Models will be entered at the registration table on Saturday, November 14,
2009 from 10:00am until 1:00pm. Late entries may be accepted, at the
discretion of the Head Judge, until judging for a category has begun. No
entrant will be allowed into the model area before the registration of the
entrant’s model(s). No model may be removed from the display area until
after all awards have been presented, unless approved by the Contest
Chairman. This will be strictly enforced. Early removal of a winning model
will result in forfeiture of the award.
- Junior entrants are defined as entrants 17 years of age and younger. At
their own discretion, juniors will be permitted to compete in senior
categories. Entrants may not compete in both Junior and Senior categories.
- Any model that has won any award in a previous Craig Hewitt open contest
will not be eligible for an award. Any model that has won any award in an
IPMS/USA National or Regional contest prior to 2009 will not be eligible for
an award. The display of previous winning models will be permitted and is
encouraged.
- The entrant will be responsible for the correct category and class
assignment of their models. However, the Head Judge will have the final
decision relating to the placement of a model within the various classes
and/or categories.
- The Head Judge and Judging Committee will decide on the expansion and/
or combining of categories.
- Each model entry may have supporting written or photographic
documentation that the entrant wishes to include for review or clarification
by the judges. The judges may require authentication of specific models.
- The Head Judge will exclude/remove from competition any entry
considered by Contest officials to be inappropriate or offensive to generally
acknowledged standards of taste and acceptability. The Head Judge has
final authority to resolve concerns. All Head Judge’s decisions are final.
- The following are prohibited in competition and may not be placed on
display at any IPMS/Craig Hewitt event:
- Any depiction of excretory functions depicting any human being or
animal.
- Any depiction of sado-masochistic activity, equipment, settings or
situations, to any degree, regardless of whether there are figures in the
model and regardless of whether any figures present in the model are
clothed.
- Any depictions of explicit sexual conduct, bilateral or autoerotic,
regardless of degree and regardless of the clothing status of the
participants, that involves the touching of the breasts or genitals or other
erogenous zones of any depicted figure.
- There shall be no depiction of any nude human male or female figures
where the genitalia of the figure is exposed where the clear intent of the
same is to portray a sexual scene.
- The following may be entered in the competition or put on display but can
be presented only behind opaque screens or similar visual barriers and
only where visitors are provided with a fair description, in written format, of
the contents of the models behind the screen. This screened presentation
covers competitors and the general public, but no person younger than 18
will be admitted except in the presence of an adult responsible for the
young person, subject to the provisions of governing local law:
- Depictions of any nude human male or female figure, subject to the
provisions of 9(d) above.
- Models or dioramas of historic events (e.g., general dioramas or
specific depictions of the result of the activities of the communist
Cambodian Pol Pot regime, a Soviet Gulag, or a Nazi death camp)
where the suffering of human beings, or the result of a pogrom, is
depicted. Where the theme, content or subject matter of presentations
is graphic or would violate any provisions cited above, at the discretion
of the Head Judge, the presentation is prohibited in any setting.
- Bases will be allowed in all categories and will not be considered in the
judging except in the Diorama classes. A base may be a piece of
undecorated wood, plastic or glass or may simulate the natural surface on
which the prototype would be found; however, nothing other than that
surface may be used. Ships may be displayed in water (no drydocks). The
base must not be the predominant feature of the entry and must be of a
size proportionate to the model. The Contest Chairman and Judges
reserve the right to exclude oversize bases. The model may include
primary crew figures. The addition of any other figures or equipment
outside, or not attached to, the model (e.g., support equipment, shell
splashes, or buildings) will make the model a Diorama, which must then be
entered in the proper Diorama cetagory. Dioramas are judged not only on
the technical merit of their construction, but also on the strength of the
theme or story they present.
- Single Figures may be displayed on small landscaped bases and remain in
the appropriate Figure class. However, two or more figures on a
landscaped base of any size shall be considered a Diorama or Vignette,
and shall be placed in the appropriate class.
- A Conversion model must represent a version different from that provided
by the basic kit. The conversion must contain significant structural
modifications to the basic kit involving extensive changes in contour or
configuration. In addition to the normal judging criteria common to the
entire contest, judges of the Conversion Category will give special
consideration to the complexity of the conversion. A conversion
accomplished with primarily commercial aftermarket parts will be at a
disadvantage, therefore, against a conversion accomplished primarily by
the builder’s craftsmanship - assuming both are finished to similar
standards. Simple conversions may be entered in regular categories. More
extensive conversions, however, must be entered in the appropriate
conversion category. The builder must detail the conversion changes
made to the base kit on the entry sheet or accompanying documentation.
Judges have the ultimate authority to determine a model’s category
placement, and such decisions by judges will be final.
- A Scratchbuilt model may incorporate parts from other kits, but these
should be generally unrelated to their original identity, except for minor
parts such as wheels, guns, etc. Models determined to be scratchbuilt
must be entered in the proper scratchbuilt category.
- In the Automotive category, the following definitions shall apply:
- A Stock Vehicle will appear stock with no changes which deviate from
factory stock, including frame, body, engine, wheels, or tires. Aftermarket
equipment is acceptable so long as it represents stock
equipment on the original vehicle.
- A Competition Vehicle represents any vehicle used in speed or timed
competition events.
- A Low-rider Vehicle may include functional hydraulic components:
however, hydraulic components will not be judged.
- Out of the Box (OOTB) entries will be governed by the following rules:
>
- Any commercially produced kit may be used.
- The natural plastic finish may be retained, or it may be foil covered or
painted. Decals other than those included in the kit may be used.
- The modeler may fill seams and gaps, sand off rivets, drill out gun ports
or exhaust pipes, thin appropriate openings, and thin to scale such parts
as trailing edges, flaps, and doors. The modeler may add rigging and
antenna wires. The modeler may add simple tape or decal seat belts in
the cockpit of an aircraft or the interior of a vehicle. No manufactured
hardware, i.e. buckles, instruments, etc. will be permitted.
- The instruction sheet from the model entered must be included with the
entry form.
- Pre-Finished models, such as Revell ProFinish, may be entered, by
Juniors, in the appropriate category. Unless documented proof is provided
that the entrant refinished the model, the model will be judged as
unpainted.
- Models will be judged by the following criteria: basic construction, overall
finish, additional detailing, overall accuracy, and the degree of difficulty
required in completing the model.
- Final interpretation and implementation of these rules shall be the
responsibility of the Registrar, Head Judge, and Contest Chairman.
Decisions of the Judges are final. SPECIAL AWARDS will be awarded at
the discretion of the judges to qualifying models, with the exception of
privately-sponsored awards which shall be awarded by their sponsors, as
follows:
- Judges Best of Show
- Spectators Choice
- Best Aircraft
- Best Military Vehicle
- Best Ship
- Best Automotive
- Best Figure
- Best Space and Science Fiction
- Best Diorama
- Best Junior
